Following the latest post by my Welsh friend Rubbish. I was halfway through a mahoosive reply on his comments, when I though bollox I'll put it in a post.
Why oh why, do they remake so many classic films!?? It takes the magic away from the original films and in some cases ruins the memories of films that to this day are still great to watch, there are some amazing books out there that could be converted into amazing films, original stuff rather than rehashed legendary flix, also there is a wealth of quality screen play writers, with original idea's that never see the light of day, due to the glut of re-makes, examples of success with recent original films, District 9, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Sin City, 300 and even Harry Potter etc. The problem is Hollywood are playing things safe at the moment due to the world wide recession. Hence a rash of remakes, some good, some truly awful yet they see them as guaranteeing bums on seats and nailed on box office hits.
A good example is Robin Hood, I mentioned Gladiator above it is "probably" depending on my mood my all time favorite film. It's just such a good story and so well made, it really lets you lose yourself in another time, a true epic. Now the latest Robin Hood is due out this summer and it has the same collaboration that created the magic that is Gladiator. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe!! They have become a bit like Scorsese/De Niro or later day Scorsese/Di Caprio in the sense they are always mentioned in the same breath as the films made are usually massive hits and classed as classics. I'm really looking forward to seeing this as they team up to do another historical fiction film. YET my issue, why call it Robin Hood?? The story allegedly bares little resemblance to the classic story the only parity is the time it is set and the names of the main protagonists. Yet the story is completely re-worked. SOOOO the only reason for this is to again guarantee bums on seats! Robin Hood is known by all and everyone has fond memories of the earlier re-telling, I still love the Kevin Costner version to this and his oh so "British" American accent, it was Hollywooded up but stuck to the general premise of the story. Why not make the film and call it something else rather than rip off the name of a Legendary English mythical figure and present it with a totally different story. For some reason I find it really irritating. No doubt it will be a good film but still.

Also in relation to the the post that inspired this mini rant . . . NEVER, ever, apologise for what you read as a yooof either, 2000AD was my staple weekly read up into my late teens. Transformers before that and Beano as a child lol. I'm proud of it to. Still got my comic collections boxed in my old dears loft!!! Along with Beano annuals from the 60's thru to the naughties. (these I continued to collect.) These things are childhood things that help define your memories and fuel your imagination, to reflect on them as sad is a shame.
Talking of original ideas 2000AD has so many amazing characters and stories! I'm amazed people haven't attempted to convert them in the way they were intended. Some really bad attempts have really missed the mark, Judge Dread, Tank Girl etc. Tank girl was a big missed opportunity really as she always struck me as a hot futuristic Avril Lavigne type young sexy and full of attitude, they managed to cast a less than sexy, lesbian man hating clone, such a shame!!!
. . . As for whats still unmade that would be pure class, if pitched at the adult market rather than trying to make it child friendly as the other two were. Some of my faves, Rogue Trooper, ABC Warriors, (One of which makes a brief appearance in the Stallone debacle) Nicolae Dante, a swashbuckling top shagger, Judge Death (Dreads nemesis) and the Dark Judges, SLAINE! Would be great a Celtic psycho lord from the dark ages! Durham Red, the sexiest of all art work ever, I'm not ashamed to say I cracked the odd one out to some of her pics lol!!! Sinister Dexter, a futurist far more violent Crocket an Tubbs!! I could imagine Depp and Snipes in the leads. In fact if Tim Burton got hold of any of the above or the guys who did 300/Sin City I would imagine they would be incredible!!!
So what fucking what if I'm a geek at heart!!! . . . Right got my Live fantasy RPG weekend to get ready for, should be good and I'll look mint!!! . .

opps wrong pic!! . . . Here we are

Ends.

the good remakes are of shit films, oceans 11 etc... Never good remaking a good film. Imagine a new version of Jaws or the godfather or scarface? They'd be shite... I love gladiator, but think Robin Hood will be wank
I don't remember half of those 2000AD stories.Too much Strongbow since those days I guess.
Gladiator is one of my favourite films as well.
I'm getting a bit fucking worried now.
Agree with United, Robin Hood will be wank.
I little know fact about me is that I currently collect graphic novels. :-) Mostly more adult / dark stuff (think Batman Year One, Sin City and Hellblazer etc) to modern day stuff like 100 Bullets and the Dark Tower spin-offs.
I fucking love it though. Who gives a fuck if someone thinks it's geeky. I don't believe that if you have regular sex with a decent looking bird that you are officially a geek anyway :-)
I think it'll be a good film as long as you ignore the title! Saw a preview when I watch Clash of the Titans, looked a bit special to be honest. Unlike CoT which was average, dragged up by decent effects.
@ NoCash, I love graphic novels, I just don't read enough of them. Agree with the hot missus = Can't be a geek stance! lol
